There are tens of thousands of abandoned and orphaned children in Romania today that live in some form of institutional care in state orphanages, group homes, and various forms of foster care. There are tens of thousands of other Romanian children that live below the poverty level that are unofficially abandoned to the streets, hospital wards and/or in Roma (gypsy) villages via "reintegration“ programs set up by the state. Although there have been some aesthetic improvements in the child welfare system as Romania entered into the European Union in 2007,

the reality of abuse, neglect, and indifference is evident across the country. In our county alone, there are over 2000 children that are in the care of others besides their natural families.

Because they have been under intense political pressure from liberal Romanian and certain misguided EU politicians, the Romanian National Authority for Child Protection and its local county affiliates have struggled to spin a positive image to the West. The cost of this corruption is seen in the faces of the children who have no permanent home and no hope for their future.

Our greatest struggle to help these children has been the indifference of politicians to genuinely care.

“The opposite of love is not hate...it is indifference.”
Elie Wiesel
Romanian Holocaust Survivor
